England and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a group together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
