Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
