A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
