Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
