Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
